Week 7 CM 313-01 Assignment

Outline for Podcast -Container Gardening

Step 1: The Decision

Your first thing that needs to be decided is how many containers you are planning your garden to be? Are you going to fill up your entire backyard or porch? Or are you planning on just using a few containers to plants flowers the first year to get your thumbs dirty? Believe it or not flowers are very important to a gardener because some can attract bees and hummingbirds to your yard. These are called pollinators and their job is to drink the nectar from your flowers then go to the next one and do the same thing. This is called pollination and is a requirement for most plants in order to produce a vegetable, fruit or even a flowering tree.

Or are you planning on planting vegetables so saving money is the option for the containers. However, do not plant anything that your family will not eat; this would be a waste of money for you? Make a list of vegetable and fruits you buy for your family. This will give you a start then you can look up online each one and see what is required of them for planting. An example of a vegetable to use in the containers are tomato, any variety will grow well.

Step 2: Look at your Exposure

Your area of land planning for the containers to be set up for your garden. Will the containers be on your porch or under that big tree in the back yard? There is still a need for sunshine here also. If you are planting vegetables, remember most of them need at least eight hours of sunshine.

Ok check back in a few days for the next installment of container gardening here on "Gardening in NM"

  1. Your podcast script is very well laid out! I help my dad with his fruits and veggies, I just don't have the land and he does, we do everything from lettuce and tomato's to zucchini and cucumbers, fresh fruits and veggies, especially those that you have tended to just taste better! Great job!

    1. Jake,

Thank you for your comments I really appreciate them. I have posted the audio version of the script if you would like to listen to it. Give it a listen and please give me more feedback.

You are correct it is very hard to kill a cactus as I have several of them living here in the High Desert that is one thing we really do not have to bring in as a plant.

  3. Jamie,

Thank you for your comments I really appreciate them. Even thou you do not have land you could do a couple of containers for tomato any variety works well or even herbs so you can use them to season up the other vegies you grow with your dad.
